On January 22, Professor Kate Fedewa will host an event on publishing with two featured guests: Navah Wolfe and DongWon Song. Navah Wolfe is a Hugo and Locus Award-nominated editor at Saga Press, as well as the coeditor of Robots vs Fairies and The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales, which won the Shirley Jackson Award and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, British Fantasy Award, and the Locus Award. In 2017, she was selected as a Publishers Weekly Rising Star. DongWon Song is an agent at Howard Morhaim Literary Agency representing science fiction and fantasy for adults, young adult, and middle grade readers as well as select non-fiction. He was formerly an editor at Orbit and a product manager for the ebook startup, Zola Books.
During the day, Navah and DongWon will be visiting several classes, but at the evening event, they will talk about their experiences in editing and publishing, prepping for and working in publishing as an industry, the shifting landscape of the publishing industry, and issues of representation and ethics in publishing. After this discussion, Navah and DongWon will take questions from the audience. Professor Fedewa, who will host the event, notes that the "event will give PW students and faculty the opportunity to meet and talk with industry professionals. For students focusing on editing and/or book publishing, this event will give first-hand insight about day-to-day life as an agent or editor. Everyone in the PW community can learn more about the relationship between stakeholders in communication, they rhetorical and business decisions that shape the books we read, and the big questions and challenges facing professional writers in the twenty-first century.” Professor Fedewa hopes that all attendees will take away a better sense of the publishing industry, but also a better sense of the questions, concerns, ideas, and processes that shape the books we read and all communication.
So, mark your calendars and come learn about the publishing world on January 22!
