First-Year Writing Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome, Spartans! We’re excited to meet you and work with you this academic year in one of our First-Year Writing (FYW) courses, designed to help you transition to MSU and to university-level writing.

Here are some fairly common questions students have about enrollment in First-Year Writing (WRA 101 or WRA 195H):  

• How do I add WRA 101 to my schedule? If you are experiencing difficulties enrolling in a section of WRA 101 that has seats available, please contact Crystal VanKooten (cvank@msu.edu) or Rhonda Hibbitt (hibbitt@msu.edu).

• How can I switch my section of WRA 101? If you are trying to switch from one section of WRA 101 to another that has seats available and you are not able to do so yourself, please contact Rhonda Hibbitt (hibbitt@msu.edu).

• I dropped my WRA 101 course and need to get back in! What do I do? f you have accidentally dropped or been dropped from your WRA 101 course and need to be re-enrolled, please contact Crystal VanKooten (cvank@msu.edu) or Rhonda Hibbitt (hibbitt@msu.edu).

• How can I register for a WRA 101 course that is full? Unfortunately, we do not provide overrides into already full sections. Please find a different section of WRA 101 to add to your schedule.
  
  
• Can I add WRA 101 after the MSU open add period has ended? You can find specific dates for the semester’s open add period on the MSU’s Office of the Registrar web site. If the open add period has ended, you will need instructor and administrative permission to add a class. Please contact Crystal VanKooten (cvank@msu.edu) for more information.
  
  
• What is WRA 101 about? • How can I transfer in credits for WRA 101? If you have questions about transferring int first-year writing classes or credits, please first see MSU’s Transfer Credit Equivalency Tool, where you can see how a course taken elsewhere transfers to MSU. • Do I need to take WRA 101 if I took the English AP test? If MSU’s enrollment system says you have “duplicate credits,” this might be because you have AP (Advanced Placement) credit or have fulfilled the first-year writing requirement at MSU, and thus you are not required to take an MSU first-year writing course.
