Submission Instructions

Directions for Submitting your Application Materials

The Rhetoric & Writing Program is currently participating in a pilot of MSU’s new Graduate Admissions Management System (GAMS). As part of that pilot, we ask that you use the GAMS portal to submit your application materials. Please read the instructions below before you begin the submissions process and follow them carefully when you have your materials ready to upload. If you have a problem with GAMS, please contact Melissa Arthurton via

1. Fill out an Application for Graduate Study by applying online at the MSU Graduate School website,

2. Once you have completed and submitted that application, you will receive an e-mail prompting you to create an account on the Graduate Admissions Management System (GAMS) portal and providing further instructions for using the System.

You must upload all materials (except transcripts, see #3 below) required for program admissions via this System, including names & contact information (which must include an e-mail address) for individuals providing you with letters of reference. (GAMS will send an e-mail to all such individuals, prompting them to upload letters of reference.)

All submitted materials should be readable in MS Office or PDF format, and links to websites should be “live” inside those document formats.

3. If the institution(s) from which you send transcripts use an electronic transcript service, simply direct that institution (usually by filling out a form) send transcripts to the Graduate School at MSU — your transcript will be attached to your electronic applications when it arrives at MSU. If you are sending transcripts from institutions that use paper copies, please have those transcripts sent to:
