Medical rhetoric, cultural rhetorics
I am a doctoral candidate who works at the intersections of medical rhetoric and cultural rhetorics. Specifically, my scholarship investigates how women navigate reproductive healthcare systems and barriers to care. My dissertation project, The ART of Infertility: Conceiving a Participatory Health Intervention Community, documents how I engaged in participatory, community-based methods to collaborate with the infertility community and establish a health and arts-based intervention project, The ART of Infertility. This organization is an art, oral history and portraiture project which develops curated exhibitions of patient-centered narrative artwork for display at a range of infertility sites.
Using arts-based practices as a method of health intervention, I make the case in my dissertation for multimodal composing as an effective intervention strategy for infertile women who encounter medical and sociocultural challenges to care. In doing this, I extend current research in technical communication on effective communication in health contexts, and more specifically offer a community-centered participatory approach for medical rhetoric research. I believe that engagement in cultural rhetorical methods allow for scholars to not only identify health issues in need of intervention, but, to build methodological approaches for facilitating patient-centered practices of care.
