Phil primarily researches the intersection between disability and cultural contexts, with a focus on digital accessibility in Higher Education. In addition to his role as a graduate student, Phil is the Web Accessibility Specialist of the Digital Content & Accessibility team in MSU IT. Phil acts as SME for digital accessibility standards at MSU. Phil works with various groups and committees on campus to provide accessibility expertise and strategy in addition to managing an expanding team of 10-15 students that do digital accessibility work. He also teaches a seminar class called Disability in Society, Education and Pop Culture for the Office of the Associate Provost in Undergraduate Education.
In 2015 he designed and helped to start the Making Learning Accessible conference and gave the first Keynote presentation for the inaugural conference, titled “Designing Advocacy.” Phil has done digital accessibility work and advocacy in consulting, research, academic, and corporate roles. It is said that he “lives and breathes accessibility.”
In his free time Phil plays and coaches soccer, reads books, writes and never finishes crummy novels, and travels.
